Sigma Club is a socio-philanthropic Club founded in 1950.This makes us the oldest surviving University student Organization South Of the Sahara. The Club is open to all male undergraduate students of the University of Ibadan. Our stock in trade is the building of competitive ‘’whole men’’, capable and willing to make a positive impact in the nation and the global stage. Sigma Club was designed to be only in University of Ibadan, in order to ensure quality control in the admission, training and general comportment of its membership. The Club has two ‘’classes’’ of membership. The first is the Sigmite who is still a student at University of Ibadan. He is referred to as a loyal Sigmite and entitled to attach the prefix ‘’Loyalist’’ to his name. The reason for this is that to a Sigmite, his loyalty to the Club comes FIRST. When such a member graduates from the Club and the University, he then will be referred to as an Old Sigmite. Incidentally, all members of the Sigma Club are MALES (Not an example of male Chauvinism-but the tradition handed down by the founding fathers-probably as another way of being different from the other Clubs). The second category of membership is the HONORARY SIGMITE. This is an honour the Sigma Club confers occasionally on deserving people. There is a criteria for the selection of the HONORARY SIGMITE and a few have been so honoured in the last 58 years. By tradition, the membership of the Sigma Club comprises about 50 students or as deemed necessary by the Sigma Chief [the head of the Club] per academic session. Selection of new members is done usually at the beginning of the session and when vacancies exist. It is not often that all vacancies existing in the Club are filled, even if several hundreds of applications are received, unless an applicant is found to have the qualities required of a would-be Loyal Sigmite-he is not admitted. As someone who was lucky at the fourth attempt once said ‘’being admitted into the Sigma Club is a fulfilment of the biblical saying that many are called but few are chosen’’. Another student who was lucky after several attempts consoled himself by saying that, ‘’It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a Non-Sigma material to pass the Sigma Club Admission interview’’. Even, when such a NON-SIGMA MATERIAL is erroneously admitted into the club, he will no sooner be SCREENED or RESIGNED voluntarily from the Club, because such a person can neither cope with nor imbibe Sigma Club’s traditions. The affairs of the Club is directed by a ten-man Executive Council headed by the Sigma Chief. The position of Sigma Chief is a most exalted one. The Sigma Chief is regarded as the embodiment of the Club and he commands the respect of all Sigmites, Old and Current. |
